Business Spotlight: Sellwood Community House

Sellwood Community House Events and Happenings

The Sellwood Community House endeavors to serve the public by providing affordable recreational and educational opportunities.

Serving as a hub in the Sellwood Moreland neighborhood, many know the center for their early childhood education and after-school care.

Additionally, the center offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of everyone, from community events for all ages to rental space for gatherings, senior and older support meet-ups to tween and teen programs. The Sellwood Community House is a house of collaboration on a mission to create connections.

Erin Fryer, Sellwood Community Houses' Director of Community Relations, says, "At the Sellwood Community House, we start with YES! We want you to find something here that interests you. Book clubs, tai chi, a birthday party place, a celebration of life, seasonal tea parties, spooktacular, vendor markets, Thursday gatherings, space for your group meet-ups, senior activities, fitness and wellness classes....and that's just to name a few. But, honestly, what don't we offer here? That's the beauty of SCH!"

In addition to finding ways to serve individuals in-house, the center is constantly looking for ways to partner with neighboring organizations to provide service and joy. For example, their senior meet-up crew recently made valentines that they delivered to local Meals on Wheels recipients.

Currently, they are involved with a local neighborhood association and three local scout groups to complete a service project in support of our Ukraine neighbors in a nearby congregation.

And as the need of the neighborhood continues to grow, they look toward the future. "We are constantly working towards being ever more present and connected to our community. For example, we are in the process of growing our senior/adult programs to reduce isolation and increase connectivity. Additionally, we are developing a more significant presence in supporting tweens and teens by creating leadership programs like our Counselor in Training Program," Fryer said.

The return of their Thursday Markets will begin this summer, as soon as construction on their outdoor play space is completed. Stay tuned for a start date! Browse from local small business handcrafted vendors and enjoy live music, kids' activities, and local food and drinks.
